Abstract

Character education is the process of developing fitrah (basic potential) of human beings by instilling moral and spiritual values in students. Combining moral and spiritual values with piety to God and religious teachings is the core of education and is the way to bring human functions to their human origins. Education institutions often neglect character building and focus more on students’ academic achievement and competence. They emphasize intellectual intelligence (cognitive domain) yet ignore moral, emotional, and spiritual intelligence. Thus, it is necessary to reformulate character education to answer the era’s challenges and changes and solve various problems modern humans face. In the sense of improvement, changes must cover all levels and aspects based on the concept, curriculum, quality of human resources, institutions, and organizations so human beings can adapt to the flow of globalization and socio-cultural changes in modern society. These all are constructed to suit the global era and the socio-cultural changes of modern civilization. Reformulation must be based on basic human characteristics and universal moral values from religious teachings (the golden rule) and consider the potential of human nature as a bio-psycho-spiritual-religious creature. The development of character education must also be based on the basic principles of Islam, namely tawhid. The concept of tawhid, or the greatness of God, needs to be applied and elaborated in the character education model.

Abstract

Many studies have examined research collaboration related to research productivity and scientific publications. The tendency is that the higher the collaboration level, the higher the productivity. However, these studies do not always explain how the existing collaborations are formed. Even though lecturers in Indonesia have three responsibilities (Tridarma), which include education, research, and community service, these studies are also limited to the research aspect. The other two aspects are considered closely related because community service is considered as a downstream of research. Although qualitative studies can help explain the formation of research collaborations and community service, research on collaborations tends to use bibliometrics or social network analysis. This study seeks to explain the mapping and the formation of research collaborations at the X Institution, from 2020 to 2021, using bibliometric analysis combined with in-depth interviews with various stakeholders. Those years have been the initial period of using Research and Service Information Systems at the faculty level, so the availability of the data helps to describe the collaboration of research and community service at the X Institution. This mapping can be the basis for research and community service policies at the the X Institution.

Abstract

This study aims to discover hospitality management students' perspectives on using SEMESTA to improve their English skills. This study used a mixed method with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The study's respondents included 35 students of Bachelor of Applied Hospitality Management, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Brawijaya. Data were collected from questionnaires and interview guidelines. The study's findings showed that the SEMESTA (Source of English Materials Using Technology-based Application) website as a medium for learning English for Hospitality Management students is easily accessible by all devices. However, there have also been instances of website buffering when respondents used the SEMESTA website. Furthermore, respondents' perspectives on English learning materials on the SEMESTA website showed that the material presented complies with their needs and is appropriately understandable. Based on the respondents’ perspectives, the English language skills that they perceived to have improved were reading and writing skills, especially for the fun grammar, reading spot, and exploration components. Utilizing the SEMESTA website as one of the English learning materials can help students learn English independently and feel the benefits of improving their English skills even though it is a gradual process. However, a number of things still need to be developed to optimize the SEMESTA website to support the English Language learning process. First, the content and variety of material on the SEMESTA website need to be improved and supplemented so that the materials are not only dominated by reading and writing exercises but also include video or listening material to help students in improving their productive speaking skills. Also, additional features need to be made to make the website look more attractive. Lastly, a login or sign-up feature must be added to identify who is accessing the website to monitor the student learning process through the SEMESTA website.

Abstract

It is required for all educational components to use online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The flipped classroom model with social media can be an excellent way to implement the changes necessary for the modern educational environment, particularly Telegram. This study analyzed how a flipped classroom using a telegram bot for basic chemistry instruction fared during the COVID-19 outbreak. The research participants were 40 students from SMAN 1 Gondangwetan Pasuruan. They were split into experimental and control classes; each group consisted of twenty students. Using the questionnaire, also the data from the pre-test and post-test were gathered and analyzed. Data were examined using two average difference tests and descriptive quantitative percentages (Mann-Whitney test). The findings demonstrated that experimental classes improved students' cognitive learning outcomes. About 95% of the N-Gain scores were examined in the test group, compared to 70% in the control class. According to the Mann-Whitney test, the control and experiment classes are significantly different, which supported the finding with a significant value of 0.041<0.05. It has been demonstrated that the model enhances students' academic performance.
